Physical Therapy

Physical therapy is designed to increase physical function and reduce pain in patients who are recovering from an injury, illness or disorder of the musculoskeletal system. PEMCO’s physical therapy department specializes in pain management and offers an extensive array of treatment options developed by our medical team. Physical exercises include stretching and range-of-motion exercises to maintain strength, flexibility, and mobility. Physical therapy encourages exercise to relieve stress and to increase the production of endorphins that provide natural pain relief.

Why Consider PEMCO Physical Therapy?

At PEMCO, we have many options to help our patients restore and maintain physical function and wellness. Our physical therapy specialists feel that optimal mobility is a key factor in maintaining and improving a patient’s quality of life. We reduce pain through physical training, manual therapy and durable medical equipment.

Goals of Physical Therapy:

  • Diagnose and manage movement dysfunction and enhance physical and functional abilities
  • Prevent the onset, symptoms, and progression of impairments, functional limitations, and disabilities that may result from diseases, disorders, conditions, or injuries
  • Provide every patient with the fundamental tools to ensure optimal physical health

Whether you need pain relief or are recovering from surgery, our physical therapy department offers evidence-based, individualized treatment plans with measurable outcomes designed to help you achieve your personal goals. We are committed to healing your body and restoring you to your normal activities.

Iontophoresis is a therapeutic modality that uses micro-current technology (electrical stimulation) to push medicine into injured tissue. Iontophoresis is a painless therapy that decreases swelling, spasm and pain caused by inflammatory musculoskeletal conditions.
Common Uses for Iontophoresis:
Arthritis, tendonitis, plantar fasciitis and chronic back pain

Decompression Traction

Traction is a treatment of the spine that draws two compressed adjacent bones away from each other to make more room for the soft tissue between them. This therapy is relaxing and reduces tension by decreasing pressure on the nerve roots. Traction is given both mechanically and manually depending on the needs of the patient. We also have traction therapies to carpal tunnel syndrome.
Common Uses for Traction:
Bulging/herniated disc(s), spinal stenosis, radiculopathy and carpal tunnel syndrome

Acupuncture, which originated in ancient China, is now commonly used in the U.S. for the treatment of pain. Acupuncture is performed by a specialized, licensed practitioner and involves insertion of tiny needles into the skin. It is an effective treatment that improves the body’s natural healing response.
Common Uses for Acupuncture:
Chronic back and neck pain, sciatica, fibromyalgia and headache

Massage Therapy

Massage therapy is a treatment in which a medically licensed professional manipulates the muscles and other soft tissues of the body. There are multiple types of massage used to treat different painful conditions. The massage treatment plan is developed with input from the physician, massage therapist and patient to determine the ideal course of therapy.
Common Uses for Massage Therapy:
Chronic back and extremity pain, fibromyalgia, headache and sciatica

Nutraceuticals are natural (homeopathic and herbal) products that are used to improve health, prevent chronic disease and enhance the body’s natural healing process. We have an excellent selection of high-quality nutraceutical products that are often useful in treating painful conditions. Our physicians and nurse practitioners are passionate about offering alternative and complimentary pain treatment options to our patients. Nutraceuticals are often used in conjunction with other modalities to increase positive outcomes.
Common Uses for Nutraceuticals:
Chronic pain, fatigue, osteoarthritis, chronic inflammation and nutritional deficiencies

Med-X Lumbar Extension Machine

The Med-X Lumbar Extension is a computerized machine designed to identify, isolate and treat the sources of low back pain. The Med-X effectively and efficiently increases lumbar strength and decreases low back pain.
Common Uses for Med-X Lumbar Extension:
Disc disorders, radiculopathy, muscle spasm and chronic low back pain

Infared BioMat

The BioMat is a FDA approved healing tool that uses infrared light and negative ion technology to improve circulation, ease pain and reduce fatigue. Treatment with the BioMat is calming and relaxing to both the body and mind.
Common Uses for BioMat:
Arthritis, muscle spasm, musculoskeletal injury and chronic pain

Deep Heat Infrared Therapy

Deep Heat Infrared Therapy is used with special analgesic pain relieving gels to help reduce pain and stimulate an anti-inflammatory response. It is a non-invasive therapy indicated for the symptomatic relief from, and management of, chronic intractable pain and post-surgical and post-trauma acute pain.
Common Uses for Deep Heat Infrared Therapy:
Back pain, arthritis, neuralgia and reflex sympathetic disorder

Phonophoresis is a treatment designed to optimize absorption of topically applied analgesics and anti-inflammatory agents through the therapeutic application of ultrasound.
Common Uses for Ultrasound/Phonophoresis:
Bursitis, Tendonitis and Joint Pain

At PEMCO, we use medical devices such as back braces and TENS Units to improve treatment outcomes. Durable Medical Equipment (DME) is any equipment that provides therapeutic benefits to a patient in need because of certain medical conditions and/or illnesses.

TENS Unit (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation)

A TENS Unit is a portable device that sends stimulating pulses onto the surface of the skin and along nerve strands to prevent pain signals from reaching the brain. A TENS Unit provides a low level stimulation (often described as a ‘tingle’) that contracts the muscle to which it is applied. The muscle stimulation causes the body to release endorphins that help control pain.
Common Uses for TENS Unit:
Chronic pain, arthritis, muscle spasticity and other painful musculoskeletal conditions

LSO (Lumbosacral Orthosis Brace)

A lumbosacral orthosis brace is designed to support the lumbar and sacral areas of the spine and help stabilize the regions to promote proper healing. The LSO helps to reduce weight and stress on the lower back and sacral region which relives pain and improves posture.
Common Uses for LSO Brace:
Osteoarthritis, low back pain, fractured vertebrae and post-surgical pain

Knee/Ankle Orthosis Brace

A knee brace supports the knee and relieves pain caused by injury and/or tissue deterioration. An ankle brace is similar to a knee brace and is focused on stabilizing the ankle and foot. Both knee and ankle braces can be used to support the affected area following an injury and to protect against future injury.
Common Uses for Knee/Ankle Orthosis Brace:
Knee/ankle injury, arthritis, sprain and chronic pain

Home Decompression/Traction Unit

A home decompression unit is designed to provide the same therapeutic benefit as an in-office decompression treatment. At PEMCO, we offer a variety of lumbar and cervical decompression/traction devices that can be used in the comfort of your home.
Common Uses for Decompression/Traction Units:
Vertebral disc disorders, spinal stenosis and radiculopathy
